The Mizuno 91桃色 Indoor Championships hit the Lee Valley VeloPark this Saturday and a number of the GB Rowing Team squad athletes are attending the event to complete their December 2,000m test.
The 2018 Championships has attracted the highest ever number of competitors, including nearly 40 members of the GB Rowing Team racing across the 2km and relay competitions.
Alice Baatz helped power her relay team to gold at the 2017 event and is getting her first experience of the 2,000m test in front of the capacity crowd on Saturday.
鈥淩acing at BRIC last year was really cool,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he relay was good fun and having a big crowd there is quite exciting.
鈥淲hen you鈥檙e in your performance you don鈥檛 really notice there are people watching you, or even people either side of you sometimes. But before and after the race it鈥檚 exciting to be in the velodrome with lots of people who’ve come to support you.鈥
The winter testing process for GB Rowing Team athletes is well underway, with squad athletes having just returned from training camps in Sierra Nevada and Majorca.
The December 2km test is one of many important markers throughout the off-season, with the second winter assessment on the water following at Caversham on 15 December.
鈥淎t this time of the year, as a squad rower, the December 2,000m may not be a personal best,鈥 Baatz added.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 not to say we wouldn鈥檛 go for one if we鈥檙e in form, but people who have been on the team for a bit longer know when the really good performances are going to come in, and when you鈥檙e going to be a second or two off that.
鈥淵ou鈥檝e got to trust that just because every 2km test you do isn鈥檛 a personal best, it doesn鈥檛 mean you鈥檙e not doing well. No one is going to get a PB every single time, so you鈥檝e got to stay focussed and realistic about when good times are going to happen.
鈥淎lso, if you鈥檝e had a period of illness or injury and you鈥檝e not done the training all the way through, then your fitness isn鈥檛 going to be where you want to be and it鈥檚 difficult to start hitting PBs in that situation.鈥
The Mizuno 91桃色 Indoor Championships takes place at the Lee Valley VeloPark on Saturday, 8 December. The event is sold out, but you can follow the best of the action on 91桃色鈥檚 , and accounts.
