Young GB rowers make their mark at ‘first-rate’ World Trials
The next generation of GB Rowing Team stars produced some fantastic racing in perfect conditions at the national training centre as a highly-competitive Trials for the World Senior, U23 and Universities Championships concluded on Tuesday.

Four of the six A Finals were won by U23 rowers 鈥 Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne and Tom Barras in the open-weight single sculls, and Mary Wilson and Jonathan Jackson in the equivalent lightweight races.
Fiona Gammond and Katherine Douglas won the women鈥檚 pair, while fellow Leander Club rowers Cameron Buchan and Matt Rossiter led the way in the men鈥檚 pair.
There were a host of encouraging performances from Junior rowers too, much to the delight of GB Rowing Team Performance Director Sir David Tanner.

Tom Barras鈥淲e鈥檝e had a first-rate set of trials 鈥 great conditions and a really good competitive atmosphere from our rowers,鈥 he said.
鈥淚 am sure in the ones we have seen today that there is some good blood for the World U23s and Senior Championships this year, and also some athletes who have shown they can compete in the Tokyo cycle.鈥
Peter Sheppard, Chief Coach for U23s and Juniors, added: 鈥淭here was very good racing and it was good to see people stepping up over the course of the two days.

Selectors will now start putting together the crews for the World Senior and U23 Championships, which are taking place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in August. The FISU World Universities Championships are being staged in Poznan, Poland the following month.

Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne went into this week鈥檚 competition as favourite to win the women鈥檚 single scull after finishing a fine fourth at last month鈥檚 Olympic-season Trials.
The Reading University BC rower lived up to those expectations, leading Monday鈥檚 time trial by nine seconds and comfortably winning her semi-final before controlling the final from start to finish.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been a good couple of days and it feels like I have lifted on another level from the Olympic Trials,鈥 said Hodgkins-Byrne.
鈥淚t鈥檚 all starting to take off now and it鈥檚 really exciting to see it unfold, I鈥檓 looking forward to the next few months.鈥
Melissa Wilson, the other semi-final winner, was runner-up and fast-finishing Rebecca Girling grabbed third on the line from Ruth Siddorn, who had the consolation of being the leading U20 rower in the field.
The men鈥檚 single was fiercely fought throughout the two days, with just two seconds covering the top six during Monday鈥檚 time-trials. Tuesday morning鈥檚 semi-finals proved equally competitive, with Tom Barras and the experienced Dave Bell taking the honours.
The final saw Leander Club鈥檚 Barras 鈥 a member of last season鈥檚 U23 quad 鈥 get off to a strong start and establish an early lead, which he was able to maintain to claim victory by just over a length.
鈥淚t was so competitive over the two days, so I just tried to smash it in the first 鈥榢鈥 in the final and get out of the battle,鈥 said Barras, who is once again eligible for the U23s this season.
鈥淚 feel like we have a really strong sculling squad and I hope we can show that by pulling it out of the bag at the U23s. The competition for places is strong but everyone is wishing each other well because the main aim is to go as fast as possible in the crew boats this summer.鈥
Bell held second for much of the race but was overtaken by Jon Stimpson, a GB Rowing Team Start rower with Nottingham RC, in the closing stages. Chris Lawrie, who stroked the GB quad to a historic gold at last year鈥檚 World Junior Championships, was the leading U20 rower as he finished an eye-catching fourth overall.
A contender for final of the day came in the lightweight women鈥檚 single scull, where Susannah Duncan held a narrow lead over semi-final winners Fran Rawlins and Mary Wilson at the halfway mark.
That was the cue for Wilson to make her move and the Wallingford rower, winner of Monday鈥檚 time trial, was able to push聽into the lead. The race settled down in the closing stages, with Duncan 鈥 the leading U20 rower and a medalist in the quad at the last two World Juniors 鈥 holding off Rawlins for second place.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been amazing, more than I could have hoped for,鈥 said Wilson, who has recently recovered from a rib injury.
鈥淭he lightweight women this year are all so strong, so to come here and win after being out injured for three months is just amazing. It鈥檚 nice to know that all the hard work over the winter has paid off.
鈥淚 went to the Coupe de la Jeunesse when I was a junior, so the U23s is the goal this year.鈥
Sam Tuck and Jonathan Jackson had led the way in a 23-strong lightweight men鈥檚 single field, topping the time-trial standings and winning Tuesday鈥檚 semi-finals.
So it was no surprise to see them set the pace in the final. Tuck held the advantage for the first kilometre but Leander Club鈥檚 Jackson began to apply some pressure with 750m to go and eventually surged clear to win by a length.
鈥淚 knew my main opposition was Sam and I was a bit worried around halfway that I had let him get too much of a lead,鈥 said Jackson. 鈥淟uckily I was able to get through somehow.鈥
Jackson was part of the lightweight four that won brone at last year鈥檚 World U23s along with Ben Reeves and Alastair Douglass, who finished fourth and sixth respectively.
鈥淚t was good to see so many U23s in the final, there are a lot of us coming through and looking to challenge the seniors in the coming years,鈥 Jackson added.
John Hale was third and fifth place went to leading U20 rower Gavin Horsburgh, another member of last year鈥檚 triumphant junior men鈥檚 quad to make the step up.
Experience came to the fore in the women鈥檚 pair final as Leander Club鈥檚 Fiona Gammond and Katherine Douglas produced a well-judged race to beat Caragh McMurtry and Becca Chin, who had led for the first 750m after a strong start.
鈥淲e improved a lot from the time trial yesterday, where we came third,鈥 said Gammond. 鈥淓ach race was just a step up and improvement, which is what you want to see.”
Douglas added: 鈥淭his is my first race since December, so yesterday was blowing the cobwebs out and today was pushing on. I鈥檓 lucky enough to have such a great team-mate in Fiona.鈥
Time-trial winners Beth Bryan and Jo Wratten 鈥 both part of the GB Rowing Team Start programme at Tees RC 鈥 came third, while Exeter University鈥檚 Alex Flynn and Oluwaseun Olusanya were the leading U23 rowers in sixth.
Fionnuala Gannon, who partnered Georgia Statham to 11th place overall, was the leading U20 rower.
The men鈥檚 pair competition saw Leander Club鈥檚 Cameron Buchan and Matt Rossiter build on Monday鈥檚 time-trial success by winning both their semi-final and the final itself.
Their nearest challengers over the two days were the U23 pairing of James Rudkin and Lewis McCue, who impressed in all three outings. Third place went to another U23 pairing, Michael Glover and Morgan Bolding, after they reined in the fading Timothy Clarke and Thomas Ford in the closing stages.
鈥淲e鈥檙e really pleased with what we鈥檝e done this week,鈥 said Rossiter, who won World Junior men鈥檚 four gold with George Nash in 2007.
鈥淲e were both quite disappointed with how we did at the Olympic Trials last month, so it鈥檚 nice to come back and come out on top.鈥
Buchan added: 鈥淲e鈥檝e struggled with our starts but we got out cleaner than we are used to in the final and knew in the first few strokes that it was going to be a good race.鈥
Fifth place went to Rory Gibbs and Matt Aldridge, the latter being the leading U20 rower in the field.
