There was also a big win for Sam Tuck in the lightweight men’s single scull with the results tightly bunched in other events.

Barras, from Leander Club, who raced as a Cardiff University student in the GB Rowing Team quadruple scull at last year’s World U23 Championships, came home ahead of Harry Leask, also of Leander Club and who was part of the U23 men’s eight last season.

George Stewart of Molesey BC took third place, four seconds ahead of his club-mate Dave Bell.

It was cold and windy in Lincolnshire today.  “We had a strong headwind. These were tough conditions”, said Peter Sheppard, GB Rowing Team Chief Coach for U23s and Juniors.  “We saw today who has done the training over the winter”.

Oxford Brookes took first and third in the men’s pair event with Michael Glover and Morgan Bolding pipping the Leander duo of Phil Congdon and Timothy Clarke by just 0.6 seconds to take the title.  Rory Gibbs and Matthew Aldridge were third.

The top three open women single scullers Anastasia Chitty (Oxford University Women’s Boat Club), Emily Carmichael (Leander Club) and Beth Bryan (Tees RC) all completed the 5k course within 10 seconds of each other.

The afternoon’s session saw the lightweight single scullers in action into a big headwind but with more stream running.

Molesey BC”s Tuck took the honours in the lightweight men’s single scull against some more-tipped opposition.

He was more than seven seconds ahead of Leander’s Jonathan Jackson and nine up on his club-mate Alastair Douglass.  Jackson and Douglass were in the World U23 lightweight men’s four bronze medal winning boat.

Tuck was at Peterborough RC before going on to Durham University.  “That was a really good result for Sam. It was a pleasant surprise to see him coming through”, said Sheppard of a race in which Hugo Coussens, still an U20, took fourth.

Edinburgh University had a good afternoon on Boston’s River Witham.  Robyn Hart-Winks reinforced her good November trials showing when she won the lightweight women’s single scull in a time of 21:22.02 with Maddie Arlett, also from Edinburgh, taking fourth in the same event.

Ellie Lewis of Agecroft and Manchester University was second with Oxford Brookes’  Louise Hart in third

“It was very tight at the top of this group with only five seconds separating the top four.  That means we have an interesting group coming up through to challenge in the future”, said Sheppard.

This weekend’s event is the third assessment of the winter. Performances today could equate to an invitation to the Olympic trials next month and ultimately on to places to represent the nation at a variety of events this summer.
